White-footed Mouse

Almost every hawk, owl, and fox in Montclair is here because this animal is here. The white-footed mouse is the quiet foundation of the food web on this whole site, and most residents have never knowingly seen one.

It is a native woodland animal, not a household pest, and it is worth telling apart from the house mouse that turns up in kitchens. Confusing the two is how a native species ends up poisoned for something it didn’t do.

What they look like

A white-footed mouse is built quite differently from a house mouse. It has warm russet-brown fur with a sharply divided, clean white belly and white feet, very large dark eyes, and prominent rounded ears. The tail is about as long as the body and clearly bicoloured — dark above, white below. A house mouse, by contrast, is uniformly greyish, has smaller eyes and ears, a tail of one colour, and a distinct musty odour.

Adults are small, roughly three to four inches in the body, and rarely weigh much more than an ounce.

Family life

Females raise several litters between spring and autumn, usually three to five young at a time. The babies are born blind and hairless and develop quickly, leaving the nest at around three weeks old.

Nests are built in tree cavities, under logs, in stone walls, or in abandoned bird nests, and are lined with shredded plant material. In cold weather several mice may share one nest and huddle together for warmth, which is one of the few times these otherwise solitary animals tolerate close company.

They live fast and briefly. Most white-footed mice do not survive a full year in the wild, and the population turns over almost completely from one season to the next.

Daily habits

They are strictly nocturnal, and far more agile than people expect — excellent climbers that forage well up into shrubs and trees rather than only on the ground. They eat seeds, nuts, fruit, insects, and fungi, and they cache food in scattered stores for the winter.

One curious habit: a white-footed mouse will drum its front feet rapidly on a hard surface, producing a faint buzzing sound that seems to serve as a signal to other mice.

They do not hibernate, but in very cold weather they can drop into short periods of torpor, lowering their body temperature to save energy.

Why they matter

Two things make this mouse ecologically important out of all proportion to its size.

The first is seed and spore dispersal. Caching seeds and nuts and then forgetting a share of them plants the next generation of trees. They also eat underground fungi and spread the spores in their droppings — and those fungi form the root partnerships that many trees depend on to draw water and nutrients from the soil. A forest regenerates partly through the work of mice.

The second is that they are the base of the food web. The screech owl, the red-tailed hawk, the fox, and the black rat snake are all sustained by small rodents. Where the mice go, the predators follow — and where the mice are poisoned, the predators are poisoned too.

The Lyme question

The downside is that they are one of the main transmitters of the Lyme disease bacterium, along with a few other small animals. See our ticks page for more information.

But poisoning mice does not solve it. Rodenticides do not touch the ticks themselves, they kill the predators that keep mouse numbers down naturally, and a yard emptied of mice is repopulated from surrounding properties, because a suburban yard is a patch of continuous habitat rather than an island. Mice are also not the only animal that infects ticks — chipmunks, squirrels, and some birds do too.

A better idea: vaccinating the mice

This is a genuinely elegant approach, and one worth watching. Instead of killing anything, a vaccine is delivered as bait that reservoir hosts eat. The animal develops antibodies against the Lyme bacterium, and when a tick bites it, those antibodies kill the bacteria inside the tick before it can pass them on. The infection cycle is interrupted at its source rather than downstream.

The concept has moved well past early trials. In May 2023 the USDA granted conditional licensure to an oral vaccine for wild mice, developed by US Biologic and marketed as LymeShield, spray-coated onto pellets the mice consume. Field trials were conducted and co-published by the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the CDC, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale, among others. It is being deployed through bait stations in residential settings, parks, and other public recreational spaces. Conditional licensure is not full approval — it is granted for products addressing an urgent need that have demonstrated safety — so this is a promising tool still proving itself rather than a finished answer.

More recent work points the same way. In 2026, researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio reported developing non-toxic bait pellets aimed at the whole range of reservoir hosts, including squirrels, chipmunks, and white-footed mice, with the goal of a product homeowners could buy off the shelf. In preclinical testing, bacterial loads in treated animals fell roughly a thousandfold, from about 100,000 to near 100.

What makes this approach worth supporting is that it treats the animals rather than eliminating them. The mice stay, the owls and foxes that depend on them stay, and the bacterium is what gets removed.

Living alongside them

White-footed mice live outdoors and rarely have any interest in a kitchen. If one does come inside, usually as the weather turns, the answer is the same as for any rodent: seal the way in rather than reach for poison.

  • Never use anticoagulant rodenticides. A poisoned mouse becomes a poisoned owl, hawk, or fox. See our Q&A on rodent poison for what to do instead.
  • Seal entry points. Gaps around pipes, vents, and foundations are how mice get in. Exclusion is the only permanent fix; anything else is temporary.
  • Skip glue traps entirely. They cause prolonged suffering to whatever gets caught, including birds.
  • Leave the woodpile and the leaf litter where you can. A yard with cover for mice is a yard that feeds owls and foxes — just keep it away from the areas where people sit and children play.
